Stem free, simple, cylindric or subcylindric, vermiform or linear, never branches. Frequently acute at one extreme

*From the Greek scolex σκώληξ, a worm, and lithos λῐ́θος, a stone.

Stem simple, nearly rectilinear; surface nearly even, cylindric or compressed, sometimes apparently striated. Frequently acute at one extremity.

L. 2 to 6 inches. D. 0.1 to 0.4 - (2 or 3 feet long! - Rgers 2 p 815

Usually almost smooth, rarely groved transversely; position upright, always ending with the upper surface of a layor or rock, usually enlarged at the upper extremity [Probably a perforation made by a worm]
