Bad Ax County.

The bluffs along the Mississippi river are very high and steep, composed of sandstone except towards the top where the lower limestone begins. As we recede from the river the ground is more level.

The Bad-Ax river from which this county is named is a small stream consisting of two main branches that come together near the mouth. Its whole length does not exceed twenty miles, and the area drained is only one hundred and ninety square miles. This stream is rendered memorable by the fact that the last, and decisive battle with Black Hawk and his band, took place at its mouth, on the 2d of August, 1832.

Raccoon creek runs [illegible...] the Mississippi in the northern part of this county is about twenty miles long and drains an area of one hundred forty square miles.

The Kickapoo river runs nearly through the middle of Bax Ax county; and the head branches of the Baraboo have their origin near the principal meridian in its western limits. There are no lakes in this county.
