Requirements of the Law.

I To make a thorough & complete geological survey of the state " " mineralogical " " " III " " agricultural " " "

II Topographical survey of such portions as may be deemed necessary I Examination of the geological structure of the state " dep, number, & magnitude of rocks " order & relative position of rocks " minerals, metalic ores, clays, mineral waters " fertilizers, building stone &c then value & accesibility for economical value {for mining & manufacturing}

IV Chemical analysis & amass of ores, clays, peats, marls building stone &c II Topl. survey of the Lead region - to ascertain denudation, exact position of the mining grounds at each locality. IV Barometrical Obs. for height & depression of various parts of the slate. III Examination of soils & subsoils. III Observation on the animal & veg production for ag interests. I Collect speciments of rocks, ores, fossils, minerals, &c to exemplify geol state of. To report 1st Wednesday in January - with maps, profiles &c To make final report, with drawings, topographical maps &c To make Geol. map To commence June 1st in Ashland & Douglas Co.

(Survey Party) [1873]

Beginning of the Survey

On Saturday May 24th Prof R. D. Irving Assistant sent Mr Edward J. Sweet from Madison to make such preliminary arrangements at Ashland, as should be found necessary for beginning the work of the survey; he was stopped at Duluth by ice, large fields of which still remained preventing navigation at the west end of Lake Superior.

Prof Irving's Party consisted of six persons (including himself) Frank B Jenney, Assistant Edward J. Sweet Assistant James Munro, Packer Guide Cook

Mr Sweet, after a detention of five days in the ice off Duluth, reached Ashland on Monday June 2d and immediately commenced the work of the survey. The remainder of the party arrived on the 5th (through 15 miles of ice) and being fully organized and prepared took the woods the next day

This party was supplied with maps and copies of the "Land Office Plats"* of the district to be examined; and was fully

*Each plat representing a township of six miles square on a scale of two inches to one mile.
