Syn. C. retriculata, Boot.

Sterile spikes 2 or 3 slender; fertile spikes
mostly 2, oblong or long-cylindrical, remote, sessile,
except the lower one which is loose-flowered at the
base; perigynia roundish-ovoid conspicuously
nerved, abruptly contracted into a short cylindrical
beak; scales lanceolate, awnless, or the upper
with a rough awn, shorter than the perigynium;
leaves and bracts longer than the culm, glaucous,
often involute. Culm about 2 feet high.

Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and about
Lake Superior. Common northward to the
Arctic regions; a native also of Europe.
