Sterile spike solitary, stalked, slender often with a few fertile flowers; fertile spikes
2 to 4, oblong-cylindrical, rather distant, densely flowered,
the upper on short stalks, the lower on long stalks, all
nodding; perigynia ovate, long-beaked, bifid, the teeth
sharp and smooth, spreading horizontally longer
than the awned scale; bracts leaflike, much exceeding the culm Culms 18 to 24 inches
high; flowers in May. Wet meadows &
