Syn. C. atheroides Spreng.

Sterile spikes 2 to 5, erect, cylindrical, sessile,
sometimes with a few fertile flowers; fertile 2 to 4, oblong-
cylindrical, distant, erect, the lower pedunculate;
perigynia tapering from an ovoid base into a deeply
2-forked beak, longer than the ovate-lanceolate
awned scale; bracts leaflike, equalling the smooth culm;
sheaths and under surface of the leaves
pubescent; culm two to three feet high. Lake
shores.

Ohio, Michigan, and about Lake
Superior. East to N. York & north to the
Arctic regions.
