Sterile spikes 2 to 5, oblong erect, the upper one
stalked; fertile 2 or 3, oblong-cylindrical, stout, erect
remote, the lowest on a short stalk, perigynia oblong
glabrous, two toothed, but little exceeding the oblong
awned scale; culm triangular rough, 3 to
5 feet high. Flowers in May. Swamps
and borders of small lakes and rivers.

Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan,
and about Lake Superior. Extends from
South Carolina to the arctic regions, and east
to N. England.
