146 Carex flava, Linnaeus.

Sterile spike solitary stalked; fertile spikes 2 to 4,
roundish ovoid, erect; perigynia tapering into a long
narrow, curved, rough beak, spreading or reflexed at maturity; bracts
spreading or reflexed, with short sheaths, much exceeding
the culm; scale ovate-lanceolate, about two-thirds
the length of the perigynium. Culms 6 to 15
inches high. Flowers in May. Wet
meadows. The whole plant assumes a
yellowish appearance at maturity.

Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, and
about Lake Superior. Extends to the
Arctic regions, and eastward to New England.
