130 Carex Hitchcockiana, Dewey.

Sterile spike single, pedunculate, linear,
short; fertile spikes two to four, erect, short-pedun-
culate, very loosely 3 to 7 flowered; perigynia elliptic
striate, tapering at each end, recussed, with a short
beak; sheaths and upper side of the leaves covered
with a scabrous pubescence. Culms 1 to 2
feet high. Flowers in May. In woods.

Southern Indiana, and Ohio.
Southward to Kentucky and Eastward to
the New England states.
