72 Carex sparganoides, Muhlenberg.

Spikes 6 to 10 clustered above, more or less remote
below, ovate; perigynia, diverging at maturity,
broadly ovate, compressed, two toothed, scabrous on
the margin, about twice the length of the ovate
acute scale; achenium roundish-ovate; style
short timid at the base. Culms two
feet high; flowers in May. Moist grounds.

Occurs at Milwaukee in Wisconsin;
also in Illinois, southern Indiana, Ohio
and Michigan. Extends to the southern
