Stamen one; umbel contracted or sessile; spikes oblong-linear
about 8-flowered, collected into 2 or 3 ovate heads,
which are sessile or short peduncled; scales oblong,
tapering into a long recurved point; involucre
3-leaved, very long. Culms 2 to 5 inches high growing in tufts

Moist ground about lakes and ponds, not
common. St Croix river Wisconsin (C. C. Parry); also in
Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Extends south into
Kentucky
