Sterile spike solitary, peduncled; fertile spikes
2 to 4, short, on long recurved, filiform, stalks, often exceeding
the sterile spikes, about 6 flowered; perigynia oblong-
ovoid contracted at the base, tapering into a long
serrulate beak, longer than the ovate scale.
Culms 4 to 6 inches high.
Found at Point de Tour, Lake Michigan.
A native of Europe, found also in the
Arctic regions of America, and on the
summits of the White Mountains of N. Hamp.
