Sterile spike solitary, long peduncled, fertile spikes
2 to 3 oblong, closely flowered, the lower distant, and
on "long slender stalk; perigynium oblong-conic, with impressed nerves, slightly oblique
at the summit; achenium obovate, or pear-
shaped, triquetrous; scales with several strong
nerves near the keel, the lower awned and longer
than the perigynium, the upper acute and
shorter than the perigynium; bracts about
equalling the culm.
Illinois, Southern Indiana, Ohio, and
Michigan. Extends from N. Carolina
to the arctic regions.
