Sterile spike solitary, upper half fertile
above; fertile three or four, cylindrical, erect,
densely flowered, each with from 4 to 12 sterile
flowers below, short stalked, perigynia
broadly obovate, abruptly contracted at the base
into a short stalk, a little longer than the
ovate acute scale. Culm about two
feet high, flowers in May. Marshes.

Illinois, Southern Indiana, & Ohio.
