Syn. C. canescens Boot. C. polygama Schk.

Sterile spike solitary, short stalked usually with
fertile flowers in the middle; fertile spikes two
or three approximate, oblong, sessile, bracteate;
perigynium elliptical, obscurely nerved, obtusely
triangular, obscurely nerved, about equal to
the ovate mucronate scale. Culm one
to two feet high; flowers in June.
Wet grounds.

Wisconsin, Illinois, Southern Indiana,
Michigan and about Lake Superior.
Extends from North Carolina to the Arctic
Region.
