Syn. C. scirpoides, Schk.

Spikes 3 to 5 distinct, small obovoid, or roundish
at maturity; staminate flowers mostly at the
base of the upper spike, or spikes [crossed out] sometimes
entirely sterile; perigynia ovate, from a broad
somewhat heartshape base, widely spreading at
maturity, longer than the ovate acute scale, margin rigid;
achenium ovate abruptly contracted into a
minute stalk; style slightly tumid at the
base. Culms about a foot high;
flowers in May. Swamps & wet places.

Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan,
about Lake Superior. Found in [crossed out]
Florida and thence to the arctic regions.
