Spikes about 4 sessile, ovate, the upper
approximated, the others distinct, the lowest with a
long tract, perigynia oblong-lanceolate, obscurely
nerved, on the outer side, tapering into a two toothed
beak, rather longer than the sharply pointed
or awned scale. Culms one to four
feet high; flowers in June. Woods
& borders of fields

Wisconsin, Michigan, and about Lake Superior. Extends Eastward to N. England,
& northward to the Arctic regions.
