Spikes 2 to 4, generally 3, very small,
remote, with commonly two fertile flowers,
the lowest supporter by a lanceolate awned bract;
perigynia ovate, nerved, twice the length of the
scale. Culms 6 to 12 inches high—flowers
in May. Swamps—common
