Grand Rapids [map removed]
The rocks found here do not split into regular forms, so as to be suitable for building purposes. A favorite way of removing them is to heat them by burning logs + refuse lumber upon them and then applying cold water. The sudden change of temperature causes the rock to crack + split off so as to be easily removed.
The Potsdam sandstone found near Grand Rapids differs from that found on the Wisconsin River below in having subcrystaline or angular grains instead of rounded + water = worn grains. Crystalline faces + angles may be seen under the glass.
