Crustacea [n.d.] Genus Gammarus [Freshwater Shrimp/Scuds] Body 13-jointed exclusive of the head, and including the 3-jointed tail; antennae with the last joint composed of numerous minute ones, superiors as long or longer than the inferiors, 4=jointed, penultimate joint with a ceta at the apex, inferiors 5=jointed; feet 14, the two anterior pairs monodactyle, subequal, hands oval, 3d and 4th pairs smallest; tail with small fasciculate spines above and bifid ones at tip. Species fasciatus, Say. Body whitish translucent, with obsolete greenish bands; eyes uniform, situated at the outer base of the antenna; terminal joint of the superior antennae with about 30 articulations. minus, Eyes periform; superior antennae longer than the inferior mucronatus Eyes irregularly reinform blackish; antennae subequal; 8th, 9th & 10th segments of the body mucronate above. appendiculatus, Say. Crustacea

nigra, Say. Black, scabrous, immaculate; antennae with the spine of the 32 joint hardly prominent.

Armadillo - Latr. Caudal styles 4, lateral ones biarticulate, convenient with, and not longer than the terminal segment of the tail, second joint triangular; antennae exteriors 7-jointes, interiors obsolete; body capable of being rolled into a sphere.

Species pilularis, Say. Plumbeous, margin and sub marginal line cinereous, 3 yellowish lines of spots on the disk.

Cythere - Latr. Shell bivalve concealing the head; eyes confluent; antennae two, ciliated; feet 8.

Species bifasciata, say - Valves ovate, viewed above and beneath, lateral view suboval, convex above, somewhat rectilinear beneath; the dorsal in= dentation behind the most elevated part; clothed with minute dense hairs; color greenish-testaceous, tipped with black., the posterior spots emarginate above when the valves are closed, two black bands, the posterior one a little undulated and connected with the anterior one by a dilated dorsal line which terminates a little before the anterior band; antennae as long as the valves ciliae obsolete; feet white.

Daphnia Shell bivalve; head distinct; antennae generally 4, ramose; feet eight or twelve; eye one.

Species angulata, Say. Body viewed laterally suboval, contracted before, gibbous above near the posterior edge, beneath ventricore in the middle; back subovate, acute behind and contracted before; sides strated with numerous, minute, parallel oblique lines; hind edge of the body with a prominent angle in the middle which is obtuse at the tip, above the angle it is ciliated; antenna with 4 filaments on the superior branch, and 5 on the inferior branch - color white or red.

votundatus, Say. Body viewed laterally ovate, narrowed before, rounded behind, and destitute of any prominent angle and of gibbosity above; lateral oblique lines obsolete; ventor deeply ciliated; antennae superiors 3 - branched, a small spine above at the insisure of the joints, inferiors 5 - branches; colour white.

Cyclops Body elongated and attenuated behind; thorax abbreviated; eye one; antennae 2 or 4, simple; feet 6 to 10 hairy; tail long, bifid.

Species noviculus, Say - Body oval, attenuated behind; thorax semioval, glabrous, rounded before truncate behind, sanguineus, hind angles acute; tail and feet white, the former as long as the thorax; attenuated, terminal joint bifid, seta four as long as the tail, the outer ones shorter, two small equal spines at the base of each pair, and one subs equal one on the exterior side of the bifid part of the tail, a little before the base of the ceta; anterior antennae 2/3 the length of the body, spincore, white, extended each side horizontally, recurved and more robust near the base and attenuated to the tip

Order I. Myrialioda Head distinct, and provided with 2 antennae; body divided into segments; mandibles simple, incisive; most of the segments are provided with its feet.

Tribe 1. Chiloganthus Antennae [7=jointed?], [filiform?]; mouth with 2 mandibles and a [illegible] divided by sutures; two or four anterior feet united at base; all very short and terminated by a single hook

Genus Julus Lin. Latr. Body cylindrical very long; the second joint of the antenna longer than the 3a which it minute; no ridge or trenchant edge on the sides of the segments annuli; they roll themselves up spirally; eyes distinct. impressus, Say. Brown with a series of lateral black dots, beneath yellowish= white; last segments mucronate. punctatus, Say. Body brownish with an impressed dorsal line, impressed white spots and dots, last segment unarmed. annulatus, Say. Body with numerous, elevated, obtuse lines of which 4 are above the stigmata; last segment glabrous, unarmed. lactarius, say. Body fuscous with a rufous dorsal line, numerous elevated lines of which about 15 are above the stigmata; last segment unarmed. marginatus, Say. Body cylindric, glabrous, blackish, segments with a rufous margin; lat segment unarmed. L. 3 in. pusillus, Say. Body with a lateral series of black spots, terminal segments unarmed L. 1/2 in.

Polydesmus Latr (Julus Lin) Body elongated, linear, depressed; segments with a prominent margin; eyes obsolete feet many; antenna 2d joint shorter than the 3d. tridentata, Fabr. (Julus Virginiensis, Drury) Legs 3b on each side; tail armed with 3 teeth; segment, gray with a ferruginous dorsal spot; legs with two denticles at the base. serratus, Say. Segments with a double transverse series of slightly raised squamiform elevations; above reddish brown; beneath yellowish white. granulatus, Say. Pollyxenus Latr. Body membraneus, very soft, pennicilliate with setae at tip; antennae equal, inserted under the anterior margin of the head. fasciculatus, Say. Body pale brown, linear, incissures ciliated, fasciculated each side; head deeply ciliated before; eyes small, prominent; antennae very short, thick, reddish brown; feet white.

Antennae, setacous, of 14 or more [jointe?], more slender towards the extremity; mouth of 2 mandibles and a pulpiform appendage; labrum with many clefts, two large palpi, two small hooks palpi or feet, pierced at the tips for the emission of a poisonous fluid; body with a coriacous [coriaceous] or membranous covering; each segment with 1 pair of feet; having distinct spiracles

Genus Lithobius, Leach. Stimata lateral; dorsal plates alternately longer and shorter and overlapping each= =other close to the extremity; antennae conico=setaceous.

Lithobius spinipes, Say. Joints of the feet with short spines at tip, and a single much longer one beneath the tips; body chestnut brown. L. 1/2 in.

Scutingera Lam. (Cermatia Illig.) Body covered with 8 scutelliform plates; beneath with 15 semi=annuli, each with a pair of feet terminated by a very long slender many=jointed tarsus; last pair more elongated; eyes large, compound; antennae slender. coleoptrata, vVilliers. [Georgia-probably introduced]

Scolopendra Lin. Antennae conics=setaceous; dorsal plates subequal; eyes 4 each side, hemisherical. 21 or more pairs of feet marginata, Say. Body obscure, olivacious green; segments margined with dark green; head casteneous (chestnut colour) L. 2 1/2 in. viridis, Say. Body bluish green; base of the feet and all beneath whitish; posterior segments margined with pale yellow. L 2 1/2 in. fornicata, Lin. Legs 15 on each side, last ones longer, and turning backwards form a forked tail; body dun colour smoothe, of nine scaly segments (American—Rear cyc.) gigantea, Lin. Crytops—Leach Anterior edge of the labium not denticulated, hardly emarginate; eyes osolete, posterior pair of feet longest, basal joint unarmed. hyalina, Say. Geophylus—Leach? Posterior pair of feet not remarkably longer than the others eyes obsolete; feet 42 + upwards; antennae of but 14 joints. [rubens?], Say. Body attenuated before + behind; terminal pair of feet hardly longer than the preceding pair; body red, with short hairs especially on the antennae + feet attenuatus, Say. Body attenuated from the head, posterior feet longer than the others; body reddish brown, feet paler.

Body yellowish white with 4 distinct black bands; tail black, bands paler beneath; spring white; antennae blackish; eyes black. L. 1/20 in. bicolor, Say body plumbeous; feet with a few hares, rather paler at base; nails small acute; spring large white; eyes deep black—1/10 to 3/20 in. iricolor, Say.
