thorax widest behind scarcely recurved at margin; antennae as long as head
terminated by a 4=jointed club.

I. 4. 5. Nitidulariae. Tarsi apparently only 4 jointed with hairs or pellets; antennae with a 3 or 4=jointed
perfoliaceous short club.

I. 4. 6. Engidites. Mandibles not projecting, tarsi 5 distinct joints; antennae with a
3 jointed perfoliaceous club; elytra covering the abdomen; palphi somewhat
thickened at extremity.

I. 4. 7. Dermestes. Legs not completely contractile; tarsi free; tibiae elongated and
narrow; head concealed to the eyes.

I. 4. 8. Byrrhii. Legs contractile; tibiae maybe flexed on the thighs and the tarsi on
the tibae, so as to appear when folded up destitute of feet; tibae broad &
compressed; body short, convex.

I. 4. Section 2. Antennae of 6, 9, 10 or 11 joints, sometimes longer than the head &
from the 3d joint form a cylindrical, arcuated, serrate club; tarsi
terminated by a large joint & 2 strong hooks.

I. 4. 9. Acanthopoda. Tibiae flattened, spinous, tarsi, short, 4=jointed; body
depressed; antennae 11=joiubted, longer than head.

I. 4. 10. Macrodactyla. Tibiae simple, narrow, tarsi long, antennae 9=jointed
body thick or convex.

I. 5. 1. Hydrophilus. Legs notatory; 1st tarsal joint much shorter than the following
ones; maxillae entirely corneous.

I. 5. 2. Spheridiota (Terrestrial). Tarsi 5 distinct joints, maxillary palphi somewhat
shorter than the antennae; 3d joint longer inflated obconic, maxillary
lobes membraneous.

I. 6. 1. Scarabaeides. Antennae with a perfoliacous club, or with 11 obconic or globular joints.

I. 6. 2. Lucanidos. Antennal club composed of leafets arranged like a comb, 10 joints
the 1st much largest.

II. 2. 1. Diaperiales. Head completely exposed; thorax trabezoidal or square, or almost
cylindrical, its sides as well as those of the elytra scarcely extended beyond
the body.

II. 2. 2. Cossyphenes. Body ovoid or hemispherical, overlapped by the dilated &
flattened sides of the thorax & elytra; head sometimes entirely concealed
under the thorax and at others received into an emargination of the same.
