Milwaukee Apl 25th 1873

Dear Sir

Though I do not assign to you a position as one of the assistants on the Geological Survey I hope you will not deem it a matter of unfriendliness. You several times told me that you did not care for a place, & that you could do better with private companies.

Gov. Washburn mentioned you among others while conferring with him.

I believe I mentioned that I should want you to let me have such facts and items of detail as you could readily give, and that you would be paid for the any trouble you might be put to.

The work ^now^ needed in the lead region now will be is mostly that of a mining engineer, to make ^such careful^ measurements as will thickness faults (if any) of the strata thus showing "the amount of denudation" and the exact position of the mining grounds at each locality" as required by the law.

Hopeing for a continuance of friendly relations, I remain

Yours truly

I. A. Lapham

Survey and also by the determination of such points upon the 4th Principal Meridian" and upon the "Correction Lines," as may, in your Judgment, be necessary to fix accurately their position, and to connect their determinations upon the shores of the Lakes, with the triangulation of the Lake Survey. The expense of the determination of the points in the interior of the state, necessary to fix the "4th Principal Meridian" and the "Correction Lines," will be a proper charge against the appropriation for "Surveys of Military Defenses," in view of the use that may be made of them upon the map of the Territories of the United States, west of the Mississippi;
