Suague hannah Branch of the Penn. canal is finished-177 miles of canal are now finished in Pa. via from

Pittsburgh to Blainsville-75 Lowistown to Mouth of the Juniata?-41 Northumberland to Juniata river-37 Mouth of that river to Middletown-24

The Morris canal commences at Easton on the Delaware, and passing Newark N. & terminates at [Jersey?] City opposite New York, length 100 miles 64 chains, has several inclined places and 93 locks-completed 131 bridges.

A rail road from Camdon to South Ambay was autherised [authorized] 1830-by the Legislature of New Jersey.

A moddle of Wisconsin rail road was weighing 125 lbs was loaded with 860 pounds total 985 pounds and was drawn by a piece of [illegible] thread playing over a pulley which a half pound weight was suspended with 6660 total 8260 and drawn on a temporary rail way, with easy by one man only.

A horse mill draw in one of these carriages about 30 tons or 30 or 40 passengers, at the rate of 10 or 12 miles per hour.

Town's Bridge

This bridge is built entirely of plank, except the piers, and joists to support the floor. The plank are laid across each other like network and pined together. There has been 3 or 4 bridges built upon this plan in the U.S.

One over the Susyne? hannah, is 2,200 feet, consisting of 10 reaches of about 200 feet each. It has two roadways 10 feet wide in the clear and has 3 trusses. Foot paths are built on the outside; the lower one is used for the towing path of the Pa. canal-the cost of the woodswork will be about $44,000.

One over the Mohawk near the [Cahoos?] Falls, has reaches of 150

feet each-only one road way 16 feet wide, and two trusses or plank reaches.

The height of the plank reaches should be one tenth of the [length] length of the road where there is but two, or one roadway.-

But where there is three, the middle one is made higher and the outside ones are not as high as 1/10 of the reach-

The Susyne? hannah bridge was built in 1829 by the Balwins, and is situated 15 miles below Karisburgh Pa. Contains about 1,000,000 feet (board measure) which cost 4 4/10 cents per foot, or $20 per running foot-to which add 5000 [illegible] masonry [? marking] $3-$4 15.000 total cost of bridge $59,000.

...I went up as far as 22 to where we set bank stakes & bottom pegs. 21st May 1830 Counted the number of stones delivered for the Brush Creek culvert & layed out a station on 231 in the forenoon, Mr. Cleveland came up at noon & we went to the upper end & commenced taking the estimates. 22d Continued our estimates to Portsmouth 23 Sunday Spent my time in the engineers office 24th Went over to the lock in the forenoon but stayed at Portsmouth in the afternoon 25th I started up the canal but found as much work to do on Sec 246 & 7 that we returned at night - Mr. Williams arrived 26th Went up the canal to Pond Creek - set pegs & stakes for Dickey on sec 242 & 243
