...two of the old contractors on this canal arrived today. Their object is to get a settlement with the canal company when Mr. White returns from Pennsylvania. Monday June 29th 1829 In the forenoon I worked on the plans for Capt Smyth & in the afternoon I assisted Mr Henry making his table &c. June 30 A large number of the citizens of Shippingport went to New Albany to see the execution of Jacob Lamb.

In the forenoon I made two copies of the table of the canal &c. one for ourselves and one for the directors; and in the afternoon I finished the drawings & carried them to Louisville but did not find the Captain at home. The weather for the last two or three days has been very cold. July 1st Was on the canal in the forenoon and in the afternoon I went to Louisville to see Capt Smyth. ...a Mr. Graham, who is to take some levels on the Wabash River - The table was not made to meet him and we have it to do over again. At this Mr. Henry is exceedingly displeased - I brought the drawing back to add one more figure. He showed me a portable theodolite. July 2d Thursday I was on the canal most of the time today. Capt. ...three times before the equilibrium was produced. Last evening it was swung round and stood half way over the lock. July 8th In the forenoon after doing some work at the locks & worked on the table for Capt. Smyth- Mr. AG Phelps returned today from the lower country and is going to New York state - He went to N. Orleans thence ventured with the intention of going to Texas but found the river & bayous to [sic] much filled with water that it became impossible to pass them & he returned.

He came here by way of St. Louis & Vincennes July 9th Thursday This morning I went to Louisville with the level in a back and took some levels on the bank of the river for Capt Smyth. Dined with him at Allan's Tavern & in the afternoon I was getting castings to balance the opposite side of the moving bridge. July 10th In the forenoon we went to the locks and measured the masonry land this week and then I went up the canal...

...and measured the rock taken out at each quarry we then made out the reports. I gave Mr. Taylor's some specimens of shells for Mr. Lea who is to call on him tomorrow. Afternoon I went to Louisville with the reports went up along the bank of the river which is now quite low. Got a letter from Mr. White for JR Henry which says that he will be here by the 15th of July - At evening the opposite section of the bridge was swung over the lock - they came together exactly at the bottom but the timbers layed was to make the posts tap on each other about 1/2 of an inch at top.
