Tuesday June 2d 1829 This morning after breakfast I went to Louisville with the level in a sack, [illegible] attend to the business just mentioned but owing to some misunderstanding among the commissioners appointed to superintend the graduation of the streets they were not ready; accordingly I had to return without doing it, and as we had use for the level in the afternoon I was obliged to bring it with me. ...noon I helped set stakes at the upper end of the canal near Louisville. Mr. Richard Singer, an acquaintance of ours, returned from New Orleans this evening. June 4th This morning I went to New Albany to get some castings made for the canal; carried the bound vol. of Silliman's Journal to Dr. Clapp, did not find him at home but left the book at his house. I went down to the shipyard to see a boat fixed up by Mr. Shrieves for the purpose of removing snags from the Mississippi River.

It consists of two boats about 100 feet long and 12 wide placed about 10 feet apart and strongly connected by timbers running across at the bow & stern - each boat contains a very powerful steam engine. The timbers at the bow are covered with sheet iron on the forward side which is to be applied to the log and the power of the engines is to remove it I went also to see the work for a new jail built of cut stone. In the court house is a man confined sentenced to be hung for murder...

Saturday June 13th I was on the canal all the time today. The mosquitoes are now so plentiful as to render at necessary to use mosquito bars.
