Three instead of two arches, and being considerably
higher. The wadi, at this point, is deep and
narrow with rocks rising steeply on either
side. Great columns of water gush down
the wadi at certain seasons even today
and for this reason it is necessary to
give large space for the passage of the
water, and to raise the roadway as high
as possible. On the upper or Eastern
side slanting walls, as high as the bridge
are built out into the rocky banks and
[prevented] guards are provided to each pier
to guide the water and to turn it in its
flow under the bridge. In this structure
we find an attempt at ornament, a deep
overhanging moulding, is used at the spring
of the arches and was carried across the Western
sides of the piers. On one of the piers an axe is
carved in relief upon the capstone of the guard
