July 30, 1904

New York

Arose about 7:00 A.M. and spent the morning
in detail work down town. About 2 o'clock went to
Manhattan Beach and in Bathing. Thence home and
took 9 o'clock train from Grand Central Station for
Jefferson, White Mountains to see my friend Gus Holly
for perhaps the last time on earth.

Had just about retired in an upper berth? when
I felt the air brakes applied very hard and then almost
instantly a bump followed by a second bump and then a
third which banged my head up against the head
board of the bed, slightly hurting my head, and the train
had stopped. The car being full of ? & many women
there was immediately a great fright. Dressed and went
out side to find that we had been running about 40 miles per
hour & had collided with a freight train, going through
three cars. Our engineer was found dead in the cab
& our fireman probably mortally injured. A good an
accurate a/c of the accident with pictures is contained? in the
N.Y. Herald of Aug 1st. Eventually they backed us back to
New Haven where we waited for the wreckers to clear the track
It was impossible to sleep on a/c of the noises in station. Proceeded
again about 3 A.M. when I slept until about 8 o'clock next morning.
