(29) Faʿlûl

This is an extensive ruin, also on the borderline
between limestone and basalt, and, like Maʿarrâtā,
combining both materials in its architecture.
The ruin lies to the S.E. of Maʿarrâtā, and
few buildings are preserved over six feet above
present ground-level.

Church 526 A.D. - 527 A.D.
The church which is situated a short distance
to the north of the town, and which, from an inscr.
is known to have been dedicated in honour of the
Archangels, is of an unusual type for this
region, a {circular central structure, that once bore
a dome, lengthened E. and W. by an apse and
side chambers which project from the circle
and a corresponding narthex at the West.

The lower story was os basalt with a strong
moulding of basalt at the top, only the frames of
the apse windows being in marble. The whole
construction of the narthex was of basalt, and
the great lintel of the [W.] portal was of the
same material. This latter has been moved
