Mr Jas Stephenson Bridlington Quay Dr Sir 27 Oct/56 I have received from Mr Lindsay the £2. 16. 11 paid Mr Brambles - and agree with you; in hoping we have come to the termination of this very tedious affair; But from Mr Marshall having unfortunately mixed the articles reported to your poor Father - with those that were reported to me; altho separate lists were furnished - I have had as much trouble with my own a/c with the Bd of Trade as has arisen with your a/c - How do matters now stand between you and me; whatever be their portion they had best be adjusted JS

I beg to acquaint you that I was informed that [Wr] 1. had been forwarded- in respect of "Vesta! - by the Officer of the Coast Guard. The Master and Crew of the Vesta have returned to [Prussia] consequently the form cannot be filled up - from the statement of any one now here. 66 give you directions respecting taking charge of the Goods that might be landed from the wreck of the "Margaret" near your Station and Francis Wilson, an officer from hence, having informed me that all the goods have been landed from the said Vessel and that which are under Bond are secured under the Crowns Lock on your premises. I have directed him to deliver the key into your charge and return to Hull. I will therefore thank you to take charge of the same and to apprize me when the parties concerned are desirous of receiving the same, that I may send a proper officer to dip and otherwise survey such Casks of Wine and Spirits thus under Bond prior to removal JS

Secretary Marine Dept. Board Trade 19 Jany 1857 Dear Sir I beg to acquaint you that the Screw Steam Vessel "Victoria" of ~Grimsby owned by the "Anglo French Steam Ship Company Limited arrived here thiss morning from Rouen in from Ballast - when off Folkestone she was ran into by a Russian Brig, which did her much damage The Russian Brig went down under her load - but all hands were saved - The circumstances are these, The "Victoria" was pursuing a correct course with all proper lights exhibited - The Brig was seen nearly a mile off and had she kept her course would have gone clear of the "Victoria" but when she approached near her course was suddently by the helm being put to starboard - The Master of the "Victoria" immediately ordered his helm to be ported, as directed by instructions, hoping thereby to shoot clear of the Brig, when the Brig came on [toward?] her & went down as {stated} before stated I therefore called upon the Master to make Declaration thereof on Form W 2 The Solicitor of the Company therefore attended and objected to any Declaration being taken urging that the 448 Section of the M.S. Act 1854 related to salvage cases,

Sir Annexed is a request from Mr Peter Flutter Chief Boatman in command at the Holmpton Station - that I would look after in his interest and that of his Boatmen in respect of services rendered by them in landing the stores of the Vessel "Lavinia" of Deptford wrecked near Withernsea on the 4 instant A Certificate of the Master of the Vessel of the Services Rendered is also annexed.

I have allowed the Stores &c to be removed by the owner on a Deposit of £8.".". which I shall hold till you obtain the decision of the Comptroller Genl of the Ct Guard as to its disposal. J Sparrow

Lt Stewart 30 Jany /57 is requested to state his opinion whether the Oak Tree within mentioned which was Droit No 153/1856 formed part of the cargo of the "Prince" JS Marginalia S

Capt Palmer RN 30 Jany /57 Sir Annexed is a letter from Mr C. L Ringrose Junr enclosing for my inspection an account rendered to him by Mr Hoard chief officer at the Coast Guard Station Sandlemere, in respect of Services rendered by himself and men to the Dutch Galliott "Martha Alida" stranded at that place on the 11 Inst, amounting to £9. 5. 0 which account I also annex viz: For services of [men] £9: 0: 0 Fort Cart to convey men £0: 5: 0 £9: 5: 0 Mr Ringrose states that the Services of Mr Hoad and his men were prompt and effectual and requests to be informed whether, as all payments in this matter will come under a general average - the claim is a legitimate one, Mr Ringrose having deposited the said £9: 5: 0 in my hands - I will thank you to make inquiry and report the nature of the Services to the Controller General of the Coast Guard, - and obtain his directions as to the disposal of the said sum JS Marginalia P

Secretary Marine Department Board of Trade London Sir 6 Feby / 57 I beg to acquaint you that £9:9:0 have been deposited with me by the Dutch Consul for Services rendered by Officers of the Coast Guard at Sandlemere which sum the controller General of the Coast Guard has directed to be divided according to a scale printed out by him. - I will therefore thank you to inform me whether it will be necessary for me to shew such sums in my account current,- charging and discharging myself therewith as per forms W [?] 7 and 8,- and also in cases where parties give sums of money to Coast Guard Officers into their own hands which they report to their Inspecting Commanders for the directions of the Controller General,- whether it is necessary that such sums should also be reported to the Wreck Receiver to pass through his accounts JS
