With reference to my Report of the 14th Ulto_ of the termination of the inquiry as to the loss of the Steam Vessel "North Sea" in which I informed you that the expenses incurred at the adjourned enquiry should be started in another report I beg to acquaint you that I summoned two men viz: George Spetch_Carpenter who was on the Bridge with the mate at the time the accident happened. I summoned him on the 9 Ulto_At that time he was Carpenter of the Vessel "Emmeline" then about to proceed to Cronstadt - and the owners promised me that his situation should be kept open for him - But he sent me word that he had obtained work on the 26 Ulto_I therefore applied to Messrs Reason & Co the Owners of the "Emmeline" what wages he would be entitled to from the 9 ' to the 25 Ulto_ both days inclusive_ had he re_mained in thir employ to which they replied £5_17_8 as per paper annexed. Also, Thomas Steele the man who was at the Wheel the time the Wreck took place_ and who was ex_amined at the first hearing_ I detained him from going a run in a Vessel to the North for which he was to have had 35s/__ He had not shipped [again?] a few days ago_ therefore computing his loss of time upon the same principal, as computed on the former occasion for which see my letters of the 18 & 28 July last and paying him for the same length of time as Spetch_ his expenses would be as follows viz: s d 1 day at Court _______ 3 _ 6 2 Weeks, 2 days at 25s/_ per Week 2 - 17 - 1 ---------------- £3 - 0 - 7 ------------------

S. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vessel "Capital" 27th Octbr 1859 Dear Sir, I have just received a Report from the Coast that the Sloop "Capital" of your Port_ Samuel Boswer - Master - with a Cargo of Fire Bricks has been wrecked between Withernsea and Holmpton - and all hands lost. A young woman has been washed on shore. The wreck took place on the night of the 25th Inst Another report gives the Master's name Wilson. Be so good as to apprize the parties. Postscript Truly yours. I have just received a parcel from the J. S. [C G?] off of C Guard at Patrington contg 2 Tin Boxes and sundry Books and papers belonging to the "Capital" Capt Dowser. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vessel "Stockton" (a Boat.) there was not any name painted upon her, she belonged to the vessel "Stockton" Packet" of Stockton which was wrecked at Spurn Point on the 2nd preceeding_ of which circumstance the master made a declaration before me which at that time I numbered in the report Book 24 Kilnsea is about 5 or 6 miles North of Spurn Point - conse_ -quently the Boat might easily have drifted that distance as some of her materials drifted to Withernsea which is 6 or 7 miles farther North - and we sold there - and at that sale the Boat before mentioned was sold for 20s/_ although she had been valued to be at £4- The Auctioneer having no authority from me for the sale of the Boat._ The purchaser then proceeded to {Withernsea} Kilnsea and took her away_ offering Langhorn_ the man who secured her 3s/4d as Salvage_ which he refused_ and the Coast Guard Officer who had charge of the Boat being about 2 miles from where she lay_ she was taken away from the shore without his knowledge and consent, - the Boat being valued at £7. There is due thereon to Board of Trade, Commission________ " 7 . Expenses Horses hauling up Boat . 6 . ------------- Leaving £6 - 17 - 0 1/3 Salvage - added 2 . 2 . 4 --------------- £2 _ 15 _ 4 --------------- consequently I called upon Messrs Brown, Atkinson & Co Lloyds Agents at this Port, who directed the sale of the effects of the "Stockton Packet" for the amount above stated in order to enable me to settle the account _ but they having settled with the owner_ they referred me to him _ his address being: Mr W. F. Marshall, Ship-Owner Stockton_Upon_Tees. But as neither myself _ nor Messrs Brown & Co - who have also written to him on the subject can obtain a reply_ I beg to bring the subject under the your notice with a {for} view of proper steps being taken to obtain a settlement of the account. Vessel "Capital" Dear Sir, 27 Oct 1859 Be so good as to direct that as much of the property as possible be secured - and state hereon the name of the parties from Withernsea who have misbehaved as reported - I have received the parcel with Books & papers and have apprized the Collector of Customs at Goole -. no doubt but that some one from that place interested in the Vessel will soon be at Kilnsea I will thank you to report further on this paper Lieut Poynter R N. Sir 29 Oct 1859 I beg to acquaint you that Richd Nightingale of Withernsea - mentioned in your letter of the 27th Inst and also in your preceding letter on the subject of the Wreck of the Sloop "Capital" of Goole on the 25th Instant. called on me this morning. Besides informing me - that he - and others - had some of the materials of the said Vessel stored in a building at Withernsea belonging to Burrill Kirkwood which I directed him to deliver into the Custody of the proper Officer he informed me that _ on the night of Wednesday - the 26' Instant - Milne the Coast Guard Boatsman in charge of the district

where the wreck in question took place _ was very much intoxicated and behaved in so dangerous a manner towards the people who were assembled at the Wreck that it became necessary for the public safety to take his pistol from him. This circumstance he stated was related to him by Mr Richd Fenby _ Constable for the parish of Withernsea. I bring the subject under your notice that you may make such inquiries respecting the same as you may deem necessary. I am sir &c Lieutt Boynter A. N. J. S.
