In re Investigation into the loss of the "North Sea" 7 July 1859 Sir, With reference to your letter of the 2 Inst, I beg to acquaint you that the "arctic" did not leave Riga, so soon as expected consequently did not arrive here till this morning. The Stipendiay Magistrate has therefore fixed Tuesday next the 12th Inst, at 11 O'clock in the fore-noon, to investigate into the matter, He could not fix Mon-day as it sometimes happens that that day is heavy from having Marginalia N see page 130

7th July 1859 Mr Henry Rounes Kruger Sir, I beg to acquaint you that it has been arranged that the in-vestigation into the circumstances attending the loss of the Vessel "North Sea", late under your command, which the Board of Trade have directed me to hold before the Stipendiary Magistrate of this Borough, will take place on Tuesday next the 12 Inst, instant at the Police Court, at Eleven Oclock in the forenoon, when I will thank you to have the goodness to attend, and to bring with you, your certificate of com-petency or Service as the case may be. Vessel "North Sea" Sir, 14th July 1859 With reference to your preceeding letter - I beg to acquaint you that the inquiry into the cause of the loss of the steam Vessel "North Sea" - on the Coast of Jutland on the 27th March last, was proceeded with on the 13th or 13th Inst before G.H. Graves Esqr Stipendiary Magistrate for the Borough of Hull and Capt Harris_Nautical Assessor - appointed by the Board of Trade_when its further hearing was adjourned till an early day in August, which will be determined by the arrival of the ship "Dowthorpe" at Cronstadt in which ship Wm Benz Bec, late mate on Board the "North Sea", _ is now serving. The proceedings one very accurately {stated} reported in the annexed portion of the "Eastern Counties Herald" of today's date, with the exception of the letter to Mr Hugh Milne Herbert to Captn Kruger - which was not read in Court. I will forward an account of the expense witnesses in a few days. __ I am sir, your Obdt Sevt. Solicitor Customs. London. Secty Marine Dept Bd of Trade J.S. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "North Sea" Wreck of Sir, 14th Sept 1859. With reference to my letter of the 14 " July last acquainting you that the enquiry respecting the loss of the "North Sea" had been adjourned to some day in August to afford time for the return from Cronstadt of Mr Benz Bec who was mate of the said vessel at the time the accident happened I beg to acquaint you that the hearing was resumed yesterday. a fair report of which is in the annexed sheet of the "Hull Advertiser" of to days' date _ together with the decision of the Court, viz The return to Capt Kruger of his Certificate and of the retention and transmission of the Certificate of the Mate Mr Bec _ to the Board of Trade _ with the Report of the Magistrate. I summoned two men to attend on the occasion viz Thomas Steele the steersman that he might be questioned by Mr Bec, and George Petch who was on the bridge with the Mate when the Vessel went on shore and who had not been examined at the first hearing. These men have been detained at some expense which I will bring under consideration in ' another Report I am You Obdt Sevt. The Solicitor, Custom Ho London. J. Have the goodness immediately to see the man who carted the spar in respect of which 5s/_ is charged.
