Secretary Bd Trade London, Sir, 20th Oct 1858. Annexed is a Letter from the Deputy Receiver of Wreck at Kinsale - on the subject of a claim made by Denis Cadogan of that place for salvage in respect of services rendered to the Brig "John Meurs" of North Shields. _ I have called upon Mr Brown - Master of the "John Meurs-", and annex his explanation - also a demand from Denis Cadogan of £20 for self and Boats crew -- also another demand from Daniel Mc Daniel - master mariner for £15 which Mr Brown has informed me was withdrawn by Mr Mc Daniel before he left Kinsale. _ I also annex an Extract from the Log Book of the "John Meurs" and as far as I am able to judge of the matter, it appears to me that the demand of Cadogan is a case of Extortion only. ------ I will thank you for such directions as you may deem proper in the matter. The Collector at Hull has seen Mr Marshall - Auctioneer on the subject of the chain within mentioned. __ He transacted some business for the owner of the "Lavinia" --- and informs me that she was sold to the purchasers as she lay. - with everything belonging to her, - consequently the piece of chain cable belongs to the parties who purchased her. Have the goodness to obtain the receipt of the parties & or some of them - on this paper and return it. ----- JS. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr Hoad Sandemere. No 33/1858 22nd Octbr 1858. 1 Deal Plank 31 feet long 9 Inches Brdth 3 " thick Mr Hoad is requested to sell this Plank immediately and state opposite the amount it fetches and all expenses he has been at. Say whether it was floating or touching the Ground. _ JS.

The case of claim for salvage in respect of the Brig "John Meurs" has been before the Board of Trade with the Explanation of Mr Brown the master and above is their reply. The Letter of Mr Ths Fenton - Deputy Receiver of Wreck - and Form W2 14 - have been to that gentleman at Kinsale with a copy of your Order above. JS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr Flucker, Holmpton Brig "Commerce" of Margate 25th Octbr 1858. Mr Flucker is requested to state hereon - the amount of claim for watching the said Vessel - for himself - Tiddy - and such other persons as he may have Employed in any way on the said Vessel. JS, ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Receiver of Wreck Hartlepool. Sir, 26th Octbr 1858. Have the goodness to send for Mr Samuel Harrison who lives in Park Street - West Hartlepool, and obtain from him a declaration of the Wreck of the Brig "Commerce" of Margate - He was Master, and passed through Hull without making the Declaration before me. - He was wrecked at Dimlington - near Spurn Point, - on the 19th instant, _ Mr George Winter has paid me £1 for the Declaration. Be so good as to send the Declaration - when taken - to me JS.

Messrs Brown Atkinson & Co. Hull. Gentlemen, 10th Novbr 1858. On the 15th June last I communicated to Mr Jackinson, one of your Clerks - that the Officers of the Coast Guard at Holmpton had a claim on the owner of the Vessel "Stockton Packet" wrecked at Spurn Point on the 2nd April last. - They watched her and her materials for 4 days and 3 nights, - of which fact I have the certificate of the master which I exhibited to you the other day. I will therefore thank you to request the owner to remit the necessary reward for their Services. JS. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No 35/1858 Mr Flucker Holmpton. 12th Novbr 1858. Mr Flucker will have the goodness to explain, hereon, the grounds upon which James Mason claims the piece of Kilson in question, - viz - has he found it and claims it as salvor, or has he purchased it. State whether the articles were found floating or touching the ground and witness the mark of Longhorn on the receipt. by which the balance of my Account Current in respect of proceeds of wrecks, - for the Quarter Ended 30th June was altered from £65 . 17 . 1 to £59 . 2 . 5. - As such alteration will reduce the balances carried forward in my Accounts for the Quarter Ended 30th September last, - and also the current Quarter. _ I request your directions as to the adjustment of the same, - each being now £6 . 14 . 8 too much.
