render it impossible for me to perform the duties of Wreck Receiver of the district without having a Deputy at each of those places - I cannot leave the important business I have to attend to at Hull - to proceed to a place on the Coast or to Bridlington in cases of small matters of wreck - or distress of ships. - I have therefore conferred with Captain Metcalfe, - the Inspecting Commander of the Coast Guard at Bridlington and Lieutenant Shacklock the Lieutenant at that station - and with Lieutenant Stewart of the Coast Guard Station at Hornsea - from all of whom I have received the most courteous attention - and the readiest assistance in their power - in the discharge of my wreck duties. - on the subject of becoming my Deputy as explained in your preceeding order - and they are unanimous in opinion that being my deputy Receiver of wreck would be incompatible with their duties as officers of the Coast Guard one great obstacle being that by a rule of their department all correspondence from them must pass through the office of the Controller General of the Coast Guard such a course would no doubt be extremely inconvenient in a correspondence on questions almost purely mercantile in their character - I therefore beg to be allowed to name a civilian at each of the places mentioned - or - probably what would be a better course- that I be entirely relieved from the performance of the duty - and that the Inspecting Commander of the Coast Guard at Bridlington for the time being - be appointed Receiver of Wreck for the district in my [room?] - when there would

With reference to paragraph of Wreck Instructions No 86 which directs that the report Book and Returns are to commence on the 1st October 1855, with a new Droit number commencing with No 1 - I will thank you to inform me whether the numbers are to run for a year - or whether I am to commence with a new number 1 each quarter J.S. Marginalia S The Receiver of Wreck for the Bridlington District is informed in reply to his letter of the 16 Jany that the report Book is to commence with a new number at the beginning of each year noted 2 February 1856

To the Col of Customs Hull Sec Marine Dept Board of Trade London 14th May 1856 I have made arrangement for the sale of the anchors &c within mentioned to take place immediately after the 7th proximo I have also sold some small articles of wreck that came on shore at different parts of the district during the time the late Mr Stephenson was Receiver of Wreck. - I therefore, as my Duties of wreck Receiver did not commence till the 1st October last - request to be informed with reference to the former general wreck act, - 9 & 10 Vic C99 - whether I am to account for the proceeds of sale of such anchors & wreck - to the Receiver General of wreck under that act - or to you JS Marginalia Sec No 8244, 8 nov 1855 Referred to Mr Farrer They should be all accounted for to this Board 15 May 1856 T H Farrer See 9 July 1857

October last. I beg to acquaint you that on the 29th following I proceeded to Bridlington for the purpose of receiving from the representative of the late Mr Stephenson several anchors, chains &c that had been deposited by Salvors in the admiralty yard during the time he held the office I now fill on which occasion my travelling expenses amounted to Thirteen shillings. I request to be informed whether I am to charge the said sums of 13/= against the proceeds of sale of the said anchors together with such other expenses I may incur when I attand the sale after the 7th proximo as whether I am to submit the same for your approval in order that I may be re-paid such expenses in the manner provided by a General order of the Customs Department Nov 179/ 1855 J.S. Marginalia The Col & Receiver Custom House Hull is in formed in reply to his letter that all expenses incurred by him in his Office of receiver must be submitted to this Board for approval in accordance with the general order of the Commissioners no 179/1855 T H Farrer 15 May /56

I shall in future send you a paper like the enclosed in respect of all wreck under the value of £5, with a request that it be immediately disposed of and proceeds of sale reported on the same paper - upon which I have affixed a postage stamp with necessary address I shall then on the same paper - mark down duty - if the goods are liable to duty - make proper deductions - and with as little delay as possible direct the amount to be to paid to Salvors JS
