"to sell wreck" D Sir 15 April/56 an officer from hence will call upon you in a day or two and deliver you two lists of wreck articles to be sold - which includes all mentioned in the papers with note of yesterdays date. He will take an account of all deals that are liable to duty- after having done so Be so good as to sell every thing included in the two Lists - one the late Mr Stephensons the other mine and send the money to yours truly J.S. I have returned your papers on which you state that certain articles have been sold by the Lord of the Manor - Have the goodness to obtain the money for those lots and send it to me J.S.

liable to duty in the will then mark on those papers the amount of Duty to any article is liable - which will be the price at which it must be put-up for sale - on the papers in red ink is marked the estimated value of each article as it stands in my Book After Mr Smith has performed his duty he will hand the four lists to you and when in your possession I will thank you to have all there enumerated sold as soon as possible and send the money to yours truly. Have the goodness to fill up the two first columns only - viz Gross proceeds and Charges incurred by you as I have charges to be added prior to the amount of Salvage being determined - probably it may be as well for you to confer with Lt Shacklock on the subject of sale as he is requested by me to sell the wreck articles in his district. Knottingly Sir 25th April 1856 In reply to your letter of Thursday the Instant I have to inform you that Mr Moxon entered into a Bond to secure payment of all sums of money that may be legally found due on account of Salvage for the 218 4/8 qrs Barley belonging to him - and I have also a Bond from Mr Thos. Skelton England in respect of 131 4/8 qrs Wheat, and orders were forwarded to the Inspecting Commander of the Coast Guard at Bridlington

Memo 29 April/56 I went down to Board Trade saw Mr Farrer about Deputy wrecker at Bridlington & Hornsea I named Mr Stephenson being son of the late Receiver as a proper person. He said no such would be contrary to both spirit and Letter of the Act and added I could name no one but some one in your department I therefore think it would be better to name Lt Shacklock as well as yourself for Bridlington and Mr Stewart for Hornsea causing the Cont Genl with whom Mr Farrer said he would confer on the subject to settle the matter on the subject of the Fees these he said would have to be accounted for leaving the Bd of Customs and C G E G to determine what share we should have By the endorsed you will see that Lt Stewart objects to be my Deputy - Return his note JS Marginalia M
