I beg to acquaint you that I have forwarded the same to Capt. Metcalfe to whom I will thank you to exhibit the former instructions received in which the anchor is described - I trust that so small a matter can be satisfacorily decided without the presence of your friend from Dundee - but should such be found to be impracticable - an event which I cannot contemplate - I must consult the Board of Trade before I say one word about expense. JS.

Capt. Metcalfe RN repecting the anchor 148 /1855 21 Feb/56 Dear Sir I annex a further letter from Messrs Bramble & Sons respecting anchor &c 148/1855 in which he states he has referred back to instructions therein previously furnished which clearly describe the anchor in question - and which I have requested them to shew to you with such a Document before you I trust you will be able to determine the case - what are the reasons assigned by the Salvors to prove that that the Anchoris not that lost by the "Jean & Jessie" If an anchor that is at Bridlington - has at some former period - been described by a person who is at Dundee that in itself is pretty strong proof of identity - I have informed MessrsBramble that I have sent their letter of yesterdays date to you - and I also annex former papers that the detail of the inquiry may be connected. 25 22 Feb / 56 T H> Farrar Esq. Sec Marine Department Dear Sir Will you have the goodness to direct that half a dozen of your "circular No 28 Wrecks & Casualties" are forwarded to JS.

Capt. Metcalfe RN respecting Anchor 148/1855

"Anchor 148/1855" 22 Feb 1856 Dear Sir I think that in this case Messrs Bramble ought - in the first instance to have been given us all the information they possessed respecting the Anchor in question - I hope they will now do so - which when compared with the reply you receive from Dundee will set the matter at rest - parties claiming wreck property are bound to exhibit to you and me all the - information they possess. I answer the affidavit of Williamson and Smith - I think they are bound to assign a Good reason why anchor 148/1855 is not the "Jean & Jessies" and also if the can - to state to what vessel it belongs I am sorry you are so troubled with this matter. Wreck account sent 11 March 1856

List of [details?] of Wrecks unsold, related to the late Mr Stephenson, sent for to be valued. viz Bridlington & Flambro - to Lieut Shacklock Hornsea - - - Lieut. Stewart Holmpton - - - - - Mr Tiddy Sandlemere - - - - - Mr W Hoad Marginalia W

Captn Metcalfe RN "Jean & Jessie" 15th March / 56

Dr Sir I was so much occupied yesterday and the day before that I had not time attentively to read the "Jean & Jessie"s papers - By the united declaration of Williamson and Smith it appears that the Jean & Jessie left her Anchor after riding to a gale from North and N N E consequently the chain would tread South or S S W - whereas they state that anchor 148/1855 was picked up with chain to the Eastward - consequently must have been left by a Vessel riding with the wind from Westward - and as the letter from Dundee gives no description - and it does not appear that Messrs Bramble have exhibited to you Marginalia M
