Transcription Conventions

Transcription Conventions

  • Spelling: Preserve original spelling.
  • Capitalization: Preserve original capitalization
  • Punctuation: Retain original punctuation except for superfluous dashes.
  • Line Breaks: Hit return once after each line ends. Two returns indicate a new paragraph.
  • Illegible text: Indicate illegible readings in single square brackets: [Dr?]
  • Marginalia: Marginalia should be transcribed after the main entry and given the header "Marginalia:"
  • Bring superscripts down to the line.
  • Cancelled Text: Struck through words, phrases, or paragraphs that remain legible should be preserved where they appear in the text and enclosed in braces “{ }.” Individual stricken letters should be silently deleted in the transcription.
  • Abbreviations and Contractions: Preserve as they appear in the manuscript. Ampersands rendered as "+" signs should be converted to "&".
