P.S. There are two categories of families now to be
distinguished in North China "expulsés" and
"refugees" - The former are to be distinguished
by their having steamer and wardrobe trunks and
by their paying their bills. The latter have
at best suitcases and do not pay bills but
borrow from their friends. You and the PUMC gang
are therefore to be classed as expulsés or
as some put it "emégrés" - a nice and appropriate
distinction. Branch yesterday described a chap
he met in the words of a favorite author -
"He sat in the railway carriage looking not as
an Oxford man as if he owned the car but
rather as a Cambridge man, looking as if he didnt gi
give a dam who owned the beastly thing!" Branch
has a nice selection of authors - I shall send
you a masterpiece he picked up in Shanghai which
Heine says has become a classic in his family
but which we missed somehow - its true descriptive
art. Im getting Carol Lunts epic from Bennett too.
Must give over and write to mater. Vescor
