From 1847 to 1854 he was employed in the Toronto Post Office; from 1854 to 1908 he was in the employ of the Consumers' Gas Company of Toronto, of which he became general manager. He died at Toronto on 5 April 1920. He published his reminiscences under the title: Recollections and records of Toronto of old (1914).; Written by one hand, in black ink .; Necrology including the name, occupation, age at death, residence, cause of death, date of death and remarks about each deceased. Principally citizens of, or associated with, Toronto.; Title derived from v. 1, the recto of leaf 1.; With the autograph of T.A. Reed on front pastedown.; The gift of Thomas A. Reed, 30 Sep. 1947.
