mile further __ 13th left Corjero, and arrived at Villa Verde _ the left wing lay here; the right wing marched about a mile further to a large Convent, situated at the top of a very high mountain, the walks, and gardens, in the environs are very beautiful; but the view from the top of the mountain is exceedingly grand _
14th Marched to Caldas 5 leagues distant, through the towns of Oumbra & Obidos _ the descent from the mountain was very grand _ Oumbra is a very pretty town; Obidos appears to have been very strong _ the walls are high & thick, & there seems to be the remains of what once might have been called a citadel, but is now in ruins _ Caldas is a pretty large town _ there are about 6,000 men in it besides Officers; there are hot baths here which are held in great estimation _ I had a very good billet; after remaining here a few days _ We marched on the
20th to Alcobaca, 4 leagues and a half from Caldas _ it is a large town; in it is a monastery
