July 13 We had gone only a little way when a sharp thunder storm came up. We drove for shelter to the N.W.M.P Barracks at E end of town. there met Col. Saunders, [unclear]. & he showed us all over. Barrack rm. Readg rm. Billiard rm. & then the guard rm. with its sad dreadful groups of prisoners. An Indian woman with such a darling baby in for 3 mos for supplying liquor to Indians. an insane girl too. I was glad to get out. We drove round Mission Hill with its 2 Cemeteries & walked up at the highest point for splendid view

over town and the July 13th Elbow river at our feet. Drove through the RC quarter with large Hospital, Church, cornered with rich garden worked entirely by the lay sisters. Then up to S.W. peak of town where Hornby specially showed us a lovely little place, the product made out of bare prairie. of 8 years care + industry ^ well grown trees. + the prettiest terraced garden with the richest turf I ever saw out of England. All belongs to a Mr. Rickards a Sussex man, a gentleman. with a sweet looking wife. These people living as refined + happy a life as anywhere in teh world. Tea out on the top
