France Sunday afternoon October 10th My dear Jan : First a line to say that everything is going on fine. Was very glad to recieve the pipe and tobacco. I do not smoke much but want to [opt] used to smoking a pipe. If persum only smokes cigarettes not here, he fairly eats them up at times. I have not recieved any mail for some time but I believe there is a mail [of] [letters] in. Reg came arround to see me the other night. We are out of the [line] at

present. He is in the line though. He had to come down the head quarters [so] called arround to see me. He was very lucky [in] calling when he did because I had [just][.....wed ] the finest [book] from home with date cookies in it. Also about a half dozen snow appels [they] were just in perfect shape and some treat [I'll] [tell] [soon]. We had quite a little talk and will be [coming] home one of these days by the sound of the papers and the book of the fighting this last scrap was [some] scrap I can tell [...]. [R] Parade this morning and also an inspection by the general. I was with it through because I was on duty from 04.00 till 0800 this morning. I am going over to a [cittle] [town] near here tonight.
