Sunday Evening May 5/18

My dear Fannie -

I have intended to write you or Aut the last two nights but then somehow or other I didn't feel like it. I wrote father but I am afraid it wasn't a very cheery letter.

Reg came out of the line with the news of mother the other day. I certainly was glad to see him but when he told me about mother I could not really believe it. He said that it was pretty hard

for us but then [wh - crossed out] we could not afford to think of it.

You can imagine the way I felt but have not given myself a chance to think about it. Mother would not want me to worry. Then again over here a fellow cannot realise anything like that all at once. It will be harder when we come home. You know that nobody ever loved ones mother more than I did.

Well I hope that you people over there made the best of it and that father is not sick again. I will write Aut soon and I hope she is feeling fine. In

Suzanne's letter she was saying that you were all up to Ingersoll. You see I never received any real bad news in the letters but for some reason or other had been worrying a little.

Well Fan this is the same old country as ever. The papers may have looked bad. but I think nothing very serious and it will be the other way around directly.

We had a fine church parade this morning. A bishop preached a a fine sermon and there was also a fine service.

time now. The mail will be forwarded on from my battalion Am still at the signaling school and getting on fine. I think I am pretty [flat?] for me. Reg was looking same only rather worn out.

Don't let father work too hard in that garden of his.
