Sådant händer Kåseri Om inte rent af ett underverk inträffar, kommer vår landsman Joe Hillstrom att afrättas i Salt Lake City den 19 ds. Hans försvarskommitte i New York har genom den svenske sekreteranren John Sandgren i 213 E. 40th st., New York, i dagarne utfärdat ett cirkulär, som härmed delgives våra läsare, till den kraft och verkan det kan hafva. Saken är behjärtansvärd, och skall något kunna göras är snabb handling af nöden. Hillstrom säger sig vara oskyidig och det finns mycket som ger vid handen att han borde beviljas ny rättegång. Cirkuläret har hufvudsakligen följande lydelse: Från fängelsehålorna i Salt Lake City tränger ett rop om hjälp från en af våra enfligt vår öfvertygelse är oskyldigt dömd till döden. Han vill icke ha nåd. Han vill endast ha en ny

de att fästa skulden för mordet på honom, dels för mordet på honom, dels för att blifva af med hvad man ansåg som en besvärlig agitator, dels för att falskeligen fösta mördarnamnet på den organisation han tillhörde och verkade för, the Industrial Workers of the World. Kensekvent följdes den taktiken genom hela rättegången.

Trots protester landet rundt förklarades han skyldig och domdes till döden. Afrättningen skulle ha ägt rum den 1 okt. Men då inskred svenske ambassadören i Washington Ekengren och genom hans bemedlingutverkade president Wilson att domens verkställande uppsköts.

Svenske ministern säger att starka tvifvel om Hillströms skuld föreligga. Med andra ord, liksom tusen sinom tusen andra, är svenske ministren öfvertygad om Hillströms oskuld.

Men det blef endast ett uppskof. Benådnigsdomstolen utsatte ny dag för afrättningen, nämligen den 19 nov., och använde på samma gång tillfållt att påbörda Hillström en brottslig karriär.

Således återstå endast några få dagar.

Det synes som om ett fruktansvärdt tryck utöfvades på Utahs myndigheter från något båll att taga Hillström lif, och dessutom har man nu gått så långt i behandlingen af Hillström att en återgång skulle betyda fullständig moralisk tillintetgörelse inför den allmänna opinionen.

Vi måste rädda Hillström för att rädda vår egen heder som ett folk.

Låt oss för en gång skull visa att vi hålla blodsförvantskapens band heliga

genom att i detta fall uppratt[? hålla] [? rättvisan.] Vår tanke ar att om vi kunde resa hela det svenska folket — och hvarför ej de skandinaviska folken — i Amerika till en proteststorm, som skakar hela landet, så skulle vi tvinga Utahs myndigheter att släppa sitt offer. En vacker dag kommer sanningen i dagen, och då stå vi där med skammen, om vi ej gjort vårt bästa.

Låtom oss för stunden åtminstone bryta ned alla de skrankor, som skilja oss åt, och visa det amerikanska folket att man ej får handtera en hemoch frändelös främling efter behang. Det kan i alla händleser ej vara någon synd att rädda en medmänniskas lif. För den handlingen skall det bli lätt att stå till svars äfven inför alla domares domare.

Upp därför män och kvinnor i alla samhällsklasser, anställen protestmöten i hvarje stad och by och mäktiga demonstrationer att hela landet må känna kraften af vår samlade vilja.

Antagen den resolution som här medföljer, eller affatten en själfva, hvilken passar er bättre, men för all del, så sant heder är er kär, låt er röst nå fram till dem, som makten ha nå ett sätt icke kan missför-

Wilson prisar invandrarnes amerikanska sinnel g, m n vänder sig skarpt mot illojala element.

Inför Manhattanklubben i New York höll president Wilson den 4 ds ett stort tal, hvari han framlade sina synpunkter i nationens vikitgaste frågor. Talet var omsorgsfullt förberedt och uppläste från pappert för att undvika misstydningar.

Han framhöll till en början att på senare tid vårt förhållande till främmande makter mer än andra viktiga frågor trädt i frögrunden. Våra principer äro väl kända; vi öuska frihet för oss själfva och frihet för andra. Utvidgningspainer, som möjligen tidigare gjort sig gällande, ha vi skjutit åt sidan, och, sade talaren, jag hoppas med tillförsikt att vi aldrig mera skola taga en fots område genom eröfring. Vi önska för oss själfva ingenting annat än full handlingsfrihet och frihet för oberoende tillväxt, men vi önska detta äfven för alla andrea folk på detta halfklot. Det är med fasthållande af sådana principer som vi i denna stund fråga oss själfva hvad som är vår plikt med hänsyn till landets försvar, nu då kriget rasar öfver nästand hela världen. Amerikas mission i världen har varit en fredens mission; vårt folk har bildats genom tillskott från alla varldens nationer, och vi lefva i vänskap med hela världen.

Men vi önska för vår egen säkerhets skull ha tillgång till enstor kår af medborgare som erhållit åtmistohe den mest rudimentära och nödvändiga militära utbildnig, och att nationen har tillräckliga forråd af ammunition och andra krigsförnödenheter i händelse af ofred. Vi öuska gifva dessa medborgars den träning de behöfva och vi tro att vi kunna, göra detta utan att nagonain kalla dem [?] [?] sattninga[?] [?] kommet att framläggs för nästa kon[?] [?] [?] [?] Stalep[?] larenheten visat vara nödvändig för bevakning af gränswer, kuster och kolonier, öfriga försvarsbehof skulle fyllas genom träning under nästkommande tre år af 400,000 medborgaresoldater i kontingenter på 133,000 man om året. De skulle dock tränas endast under en mycket kort tid hvarje år. I samband härmed hoppades tal. att nationalgardet skulle få det erkännande det förtjänar och vinna ökadt understöd från den nationella regeringeus sida. Hva vi alla önska är att landets försvarskrafter skola bil en verklig del af nationen och icke enafskild professionell styrka; den största kostnaden skulle bli för utrustningen, icke för träningen. Amerikansk politik har alltid sett hän till flottansom den hufvudsakliga och första försvarslinjen, och den är också en af de förnämsta i världen Allt hvad vi här ha att göra är att öka hastigheten i den politik som vi länge följt och lägga våra planer för en längre tid framåt. TO THE HONORABLE WILLIAM SPRY, Governor of the State of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

THE UNDERSIGNED, all being citizens of the United States, and whose addresses are opposite their names, having been informed concerning the recent trial and conviction of one Joseph Hillstrom, (also known as Joe Hill) by the District Court of Salt Lake County, Utah, for the alleged killing of J.S. Morrison, and his son, Arling Morrison, in Salt Lake County, Utah, on January 10th, 1914, and of the affirmance of the Judgement of conviction of said District Court by the Supreme Court of the State of Utah, hereby make appeal to your executive clemency on behalf of said Hillstrom, and request that you grant him a pardon, for the following reasons, to-wit:

That the said Hillstrom was denied by the Judge of the said District Court of Salt Lake County that fair and impartial trial which is guaranteed to all citizens of the United States by the Constitution thereof, and the laws of the State of Utah, in that the said Court denied to him the privilege of being defended by counsel of his own selection, or of conducting his own defence, and that he has therefore been deprived of the benefit of counsel.

Because the conviction of said Hillstrom was obtained upon flimsy and wholly insufficient evidence, the said trial being a mockery of justice and the verdict rendered therein due wholly to prejudice prevailing in said Salt Lake County against Hillstrom because of his activity in the labor movement.

Resolution

Whereas, we, the Swedish speaking people of Belvidere Ill in massmeeting assembled, have learned that one countryman of ours, JOSEPH HILLSTROM by name, is being unjustly held in jail in Salt Lake City, Utah, under sentence to die on Nov. 19, 1915:

Whereas, we from all accounts of his trial have become convinced that the said Joseph Hillstrom is innocent of the crime of which he is accused and is merely a victim of a conspiracy, due to hatred and prejudice on account of his activity in the labor movement;

Whereas, Joseph Hillstrom never had a fair trial;

Whereas, he has been denied a new trial in spite of the gravest errors in his trial; and

Whereas, this innocent man is in immediate danger of being judicially murdered, due to the stubborn prejudice of his judges, and

Whereas, these same judges in the Board of Pardon have tried to justify their position by slandering the character of the man they unjustly deliver to death, by falsely imputing to him a criminal record;

Therefore, be it

Resolved, that we, one for all, and all for one, demand that the execution of Joseph Hillstrom be stayed, and that he be immediately liberated or granted a new trial.

The sentence has been pronounced by men, and it can be set aside by men as long as Hillstrom is alive. Law was made for the sake of man and not man for the sake of the law. And be it further

Resolved, that we condemn as cowardly the action of the Board of Pardons in falsely imputing, through the press, a criminal record to a man whom they deny the chance to defend himself; and be it further

Resolved, that, should, contrary to our expectations, the sentence be carried out, we shall hold the whole American people responsible for such an outrage; and be it further

Resolved, that in such a case American citizenship has no longer any value to us, and that we forsware the loyalty and allegiance to American laws, government and institutions, which has heretofore characterized our people. For where law and government cease to be the instruments of justice and are used for the murder of the innocent, loyalty ceases to be a virtue. And be it further

Resolved, that these resolutions be immediately communicated to the press, to the President of the United States, to the Governor of the State of Utah and so the Mayor of our City
