L.M. Reports:

Salt Lake, Utah, Saturday, December 4, 1915.

Hedberg planned to go to Garfield this morning to
secure work, but missed his train.

During a conversation with Hedberg, I asked him what
he meant by saying the Defense Committee representing the I.W.W.
were crooks. He said that they did not do anything to protect
Hillstrom and did not try to defend him in the least. He continued,
"Now the paper comes out and says that the I.W.W.
are holding secret meetings in private dwellings instead of
holding them at headquarters, planning to carry out threats
of a few weeks ago. The Governor had this published just to
get some of these fellows to do something or say something so
he can get a case on them of some kind. I really don't know
what he is trying to get at, but I do know if anything of
this kind really existed, they would not publish it in the papers
but would wait for developements, then they would have a case
on the whole bunch. Of course this paper talk might be true
for all I know and Rowan and the rest of the Committee might
have gone out prepared to blow up Spry's home on the night of
the 18th without my knowledge of it, as I was not with any of
them that night; but you can take it from me, they did not pull
any such stunt, as they are too cowardly and knew too well
where they would land if they did. I asked Hedberg to take
a walk around the boulevard with me, and he said, "No, that is
too close to the Capitol. If I was caught walking around there
they would arrest me sure."
