Hedberg said that the Defense Committee representing
I.W.W. did not do anything to clear Hillstrom; that when the
authorities had lies published about Hillstrom's past record
the Defense Committee did not try to prove them fakes; that
they were too cowardly to do anything; that if they had tried
to get public opinion on their side, Joe would have been freed.
He said that they are all a bunch of cowards and crooks, and
as he did not say anything for several seconds, I asked him
what he meant by that. He started to tell me, when Johnson
who had been to a picture show, came in. Hedberg did not
talk of the Subject after that. He is very careful what he
says to me about the Hillstrom case when Johnson is around.
