Gov. Wm Spry Salt Lake City
Dear Governor: At this Thanksgiving time it is indeed gratifying to me to know that my home State, Utah, has a "Man" at her head. A man of courage and integrity, A man who dares to do right. One whos desire is, to at any cost uphold the honor and enforce the Laws of his State and if necessary to the disapproval of the head of the Nation.
May you be protected and given strength to fullfil every duty [devolving?] upon you.
Kind regards to yourself and family I am very truly Yours

TO THE HONORABLE WILLIAM SPRY, Governor of the State of Utah, Salt Lak City, Utah.
THE UNDERSIGNED, all being citizens of the United States, and whose addresses are set opposite their names, having been informed concerning the recent trial and conviction of one Joseph Hillstrom, (also known as Joe Hill) by the Direct Court of Salt Lake County, Utah, for the alleged Killing of J. S. Morrison, and his son, Arling Morrison, in Salt Lake County, Utah on January 10th, 1914, and of the affirmance of the Judgement of conviction of said District Court by the Supremem Court of the State of Utah, hereby make appeal to your executive clemency on behalf of said Hillstrom, and request that you grant him a pardon, for the following reasons, to-wit:
That the said Hillstrom was denied by the Judge of the said District Court of Salt Lake County that fiar and impartial trial which is guaranteed to all citizens of the United States by the Constitution thereof, and the lawas of the State of Utah, in that the said Court denied to him the privilege of being defended by counsel of his own seclection, or of conducting his own defence, and that he has therefore been deprived of the benefit of counsel.
Because the conviction of said Hillstrom was obtained upon flimsy and wholly insufficient evidence, the said trial being a mockety of justice and the verdict rendered therein due wholly to prejudice prevailing in said Salt Lake County against Hillstrom because of his activity in the labor movement.

Nov 19. 1915 Governor Spry, Salt Lake City, Utah. Sir:- I am one of those twentieth century cranks opposed to capital punishment. Regarding it as a relic of barbarism. - but I must say that the Presidents attitude and action in the case you have just had under consideration makes a parody out of law and justice. The present administration, representing a party so keen to assert the [might?] of the state, seems to have gone into the business of [?] the [?] and its affairs in the ethical

listened carefully, prayerfully to all the evidence and how [illegible] did the party guilty and they have been given every opportunity of the courts I believe the law should take its course. I hope you will pardon my [illegible] expression to you but I first had to write and let you know there are sound people who believe in you.
Yours Truly, John. C. Spry.
