OFFICE OF Klondike Brick & Tile Works JOHN M. NICHOLS, Proprietor DYERSBURG, TENN.

Nov. 20' 1915

Governor Spry Salt Lake City Utah.

Dear Governor:-

I want to congratulate you on the firm and manly stand you took in the Joseph Hillstrom case. If every officer in the U.S. had the grit you have, it would not be long until our country would be rid of all such lawless bands. I am with you heart and hand.

Yours very truly John M. Nichols

Dec. 16, 1915.

Mr. J.M. Nicholds, Dyersburg, Tenn.

My dear Mr. Nichols:

I beg to thank you most sincerely for your cordial letter of Nov. 20th, expressing your approval of my action on the Hillstrom case. I have shown your letter to the members of the Board of Pardons and they join in this expression of thanks.

It is a pleasure to hear from the good citizens of the country who are lending their support to pubic officials in their efforts to maintain law and order. The moral effect of the outspoken allegiance to the institutions of government by men like yourself, is most salutory and the sentiments which you are assisting in building up, will work for the perpetuation of the ideals upon which our government was founded.

Very truly, Governor

December 4th, 1916.

Mr. P.J. Owens, 153 C St., Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dear Mr. Owens:-

There has been so much to engage my attention during the past month or so that until now, it has been impossible to reach a reply to your letter of November 18th.

Your expression of approval of my action in the Hillstrom case is deeply appreciated and I wish you to know that expressions of men like yourself have been a source of strength to the officials who have been charged with the admininstration of the law. So long as we have in our midst, those like yoursself, who are outspoken in their support of law and order and who frown upon the actions of those who threaten and intimidate, there is little danger that the anarchistic element will gain a foothold in our midst.

Again thanking you and with kind personal regards, I remain

Cordially yours,

Governor.

Hon. William Spry, Governor of Utah, Salt Lake.

Sir:

I have read with great interest your telegram in connection with the execution of Hillstrom published to-day, & while my humble opinion may not amount to much, I cannot help but say, for the good of our beloved country, I wish there were more governors & public servants of your caliber:
