January 10, 1916.

Mr. Jesse French, Jr.,
New Castle, Indiana.
My dear Sir:-
A press of business has made it impossible for me to
handle the large accumulation of mail in my office and I
therefore beg to apologize for this delayed acknowledgement
of your cordial letter of November 20th, continuing an ex-
pression of your approval of my action in the notorious
Hillstrom case.
It is a source of much satisfaction to me to find that
in doing what I regarded as my plain and simple duty, I have
the approval of the people of the United States who stand
for the enforcement of law and order. Over twenty-five
pieces of mail were written on behalf of this criminal,
many of wich were threatening in character. I have been
strongly impressed with the idea that the time is ripe for
all good thinking people and those who desire the institu-
tions of government to continue, to take drastic steps
against the anarchistic organizations which are growing
up in this country in open opposition to our principles
of government.
Again thanking you and with the compliments of the
season, I am
Cordially yours,
Governor.
