Bruceville, Knox Co., Ind.

August 12th 1914.

To his Excellency Gov. William Spry: We whose names accompany this Petition respectfully ask for your Execution Interference in the Case Joe Hill Song Writer and Composer sentenced to be shot September 4th 1914 unless the Supreme Court of Utah acts favorably on his Appeal for a New Trial. All the circumstances connected with his Trial and Correction convince us that he is the victim of Prejudice and Hate arising from the fact that he belongs to the I.W.W. Organization. We are not members of that Organization but we feel that no good ends are subserved by illegal or unjust actions especially on the part of the Courts of the Land. The conviction is growing in this county that our Judiciary is not fair in its dealings with Labor and Poverty and every unjust decision dispenses and intensifies it. You may interfere here effectively. (Over)

Bruceville, Knox. Co. Ind. August, 28, 1915.

The Honorable William Spry, Governor of the State of Utah;

Your excellency: We whose names are underwritten request you to exercise your executive authority in behalf of Mr. Joe Hill, a labor leader and song-writer condemned to die by the hand of the executioner in Salt Lake City in October for a crime he did not commit. We urge you to this act of clemency on the grounds of simple justice, for his sentence was obviously unjust; also for the further reason that another victim added to the long list of men and women outraged and oppressed by [begin strike] by [end strike] Big Business in this county will only add to that feeling of resentment on the front of the People that will be able to make itself felt in time. We also urge that the carrying out of that sentence will reflect no credit on the Government and Judiciary of the State of Utah and the country at large. With sincere respect we ask your intervention.
