Twin Falls Idaho, August 31, 1914 Mr. Wm. Spry, Governor of the State of Utah Salt Lake City, Utah

Dear Sir: If the newspapers are correct we are informed that the State of Utah is about to have another bloodfeast, and that this time it is a laboring man by the name of Joe Hill who is to be slaughtered. We do not know whether this man is guilty or not, but even if he is, what justification has any Commonwealth to take his life in return. Murder has never been stopped by inflicting the deathpenalty, in fact it has nothing to do with it. Crime is a decease and should be dealt with accordingly. How would you feel about taking an inmate out of an insane asylum put him up before the firing squad as we understand, is to be done with Joe Hill? Would you not think twice? We believe that you would even refuse to do it. The clamor of today is blood, tomorrow it will be for JUSTICE. We therefore ask you, or rather demand from you that you will take this case under consideration, from a humane standpoint and not from the revengeful standpoint, and by your decision prevent the the LEGAL MURDER that is planned in Salt Lake City this coming week, with Joe Hill as the victim. Yours for HUMANITY F. Olson, Mrs. F. Olson, [Mynte?] Ayotte Henry Mahnken J. A. [Solisffman?] W. B. Easterly Caroline A. Sparks J. C. Crawford Rachael Noble Iva Hancock S.G. Gilleland V. C.
